Sustainable IT: Our Commitment to a Greener Future

At BCC IT, we understand the environmental impact of our industry – from e-waste and energy consumption to responsible sourcing, and we are committed to making a difference by embracing sustainable practices.

Spring signifies renewal and our thoughts return to the natural environment after its dormant winter sleep. It serves as a catalyst for action, and this month we’re supporting some key ecological initiatives that align with our mission:

Global Recycling Day – March 18

E-waste is one of the fastest growing waste streams worldwide with millions of outdated or unused devices ending up in landfills. As a technology provider, we take responsibility for ensuring IT equipment is reused, refurbished, or recycled properly.

  • We partner with certified e-waste recycling programs and encourage our clients to dispose of old devices securely and sustainably.
  • We actively support charitable initiatives and promote circular economy principles by offering refurbished IT equipment to micro-businesses and local communities who would otherwise not be able to afford them.
The Great British Spring Clean – March 1 through to April 6

While this campaign traditionally focusses on cleaning up outdoor spaces, digital clutter is often overlooked yet can be just as important. Outdated systems, unused software, and inefficient data storage, all contribute to excessive energy use.

  • We help SMBs declutter their digital infrastructure by auditing our clients’ IT environments and removing redundant systems.
  • We promote and manage cloud-based solutions that optimise energy efficiency and reduce the need for power hungry on-premises hardware.
  • Our secure data destruction services ensure old files are erased responsibly.
World Wildlife Day – Monday 3rd March and World Water Day – Saturday 22nd March

We are still keen to embrace a traditional clean-up while combining these two significant events. Members of our team are planning an organised walk and beach clean-up at the stunning location of Cei Bach, near New Quay, and we aim to raise enough money to adopt a Seal off Skomer Island. If we manage to raise £50 or more we will also adopt a Puffin! For anyone interested in South and West Wales wildlife adoptions you can find a link with more details below this article.

Earth Hour – March 22 (7:30-8:30 PM)

A single hour can make a powerful statement. Earth Hour reminds us that small actions lead to big changes.

  • We advocate for energy efficient IT setups, from low power hardware to automated power saving settings.
  • We continuously improve our own energy efficiency, from sustainable office practices, to using local, and eco-friendly suppliers.
  • During this month’s earth hour, we are encouraging our staff and customers to switch off non-essential power sources. Mark the hour in your calendar and join us if you can!
ISO 14001

We are actively working towards our ISO 14001 certification to reflect our commitment to embedding sustainability into everything that we do. By implementing an Environment Management System (EMS), we are ensuring that our processes, partnerships and policies contribute to a more sustainable future.

A Call to Action

A greener future is a shared responsibility, and our environment relies on the choices we all make. We believe it is possible to make technology part of a sustainable solution. Whether it’s re-thinking IT waste, embracing greener business practices, or appreciating nature in our personal time, every decision counts – for businesses, communities, individuals, and the earth.

Follow our social media for regular posts and updates throughout the month, and if you’ve been inspired to to join us let us know what you’re doing to embrace a greener March and a planet friendly future.
